Japan - Mekong Delta Exchange Program 2025 in Can Tho

On August 8, 2025, we attended the Japan - Mekong Delta Exchange Program, co-organized by the People's Committee of Can Tho City together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of Japan, and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). The program took place that afternoon in Can Tho City.

About the Japan - Mekong Delta Exchange Program

The event brought together representatives of local government, diplomatic missions, and Japan's trade promotion organization, creating a forum for both sides to discuss the potential for investment cooperation in the Mekong Delta region. With the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of Japan, and JETRO among the co-organizers, the program signals that Japanese interest in this area extends beyond the traditional major economic centers of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Why Can Tho Deserves Investors' Attention

Can Tho is the economic, commercial, and logistics hub of the Mekong Delta, with a dense river network, abundant agricultural and aquatic resources, and a young, hardworking workforce.

In terms of infrastructure, the city has Can Tho International Airport, a seaport system, and an expressway network offering convenient connections to Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces. This combination of air, sea, and road links is an important factor for manufacturing and distribution businesses, particularly in agricultural and seafood processing - sectors that build on the region's existing strengths.

Japanese Investment Projects in Can Tho

Can Tho currently hosts 13 Japanese investment projects with total capital of approximately USD 1.6 billion. Two stand out:

AEON Mall Can Tho shopping center, invested by AEON Mall - covering approximately 8.6 hectares with total capital of around USD 216 million.

O Mon II thermal power plant, in which Marubeni participates as a capital partner alongside a Vietnamese general construction corporation - with a capacity of 1,050 MW and total capital of USD 1.3 billion.

These two projects span two very different sectors, retail and energy, reflecting the relatively broad scope of Japanese investor interest in the locality - from consumer-facing facilities to large-scale energy infrastructure.
